For the first quarter, I’ve read 3 books only. I told myself that I have to catch up to my target , so I did.
This quarter, I was able to read 6 books. 🙂
1st quarter – 3 books
2nd quarter – 6 books
1. China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan
These Asians are really rich, and all they think about is money, they forget about manners.
I am super envious with the life they’re living, but that is only in the beginning because in the end the writer shows the good and the bad side of being wealthy. And I don’t want to be the negative kind of rich.
One of the things that are very striking to me in this book is this quote “If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people He gave it to.” – Dorothy Parker. You have to look on the left and the right, because God gives money to those people who use it for their own advantage and to those people who use it in helping people.
The book revolves around the married life of Rachel Chu and Nick Young. But the day before their wedding, Eleanor Young; Nick’s mom, arrived at the venue. Everyone was surprised because for two years, Nick is deranged to her mom after everything that happened in Singapore. (Read the book one.)
Eleanor has a reason why she apparently rushed to L.A, it is to expose what she found out. Rachel Chu is a daughter of a billionaire Chinese politician (how come? Read the book na lang, it’s too long to explain here. hehe)
Rachel and Nick travel to Shanghai for their honeymoon and also to meet the family of Rachel’s father. They met Rachel’s brother; Carlton, who is a carbon copy of Rachel, and his friend Colette. They were introduced to different wealthy people and found themselves agreeing to charter a jet to Paris, where Carlton almost got into a car accident AGAIN, but thanks to Rachel being the sister that Carlton never had, but now he has.
The part where Rachel almost dies because of poisoning breaks my heart as I’m afraid that she might really die. You know, some books nowadays kill their lead character for a more dramatic ending but fortunately, Rachel didn’t die.
The book also told stories of some people related to Nick and Rachel, and my favorite among them is the life of Astrid and her struggles with her husband Michael.
Favorite Line: “Behind every fortune lies a great crime. —HONORÉ DE BALZAC”
2. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by JK Rowling
Yes, since we created a Harry Potter inspired summer camp; I’ve decided to read the sequel. I’m a fan of Harry Potter movie, I still wished that Hogwarts were real and so the magical world. I’m quiet hoping to discover their world because I know for sure that I’m a muggle and I’m thinking that their world was just hidden from our world. 😀 I’m not crazy, you know.
Let’s go back to the book now; this is the story of Harry Potter’s child. In this book, the trio is now an adult who now has their own family. Hermione ends up with Ron, while Harry marries Ginny Weasley. Happy ending right? Hehe
Well, yes, the whole magical world was at peace for quite some time now. The trio’s daughter and sons are already in Hogwarts to study magic and to advance their ability. But Albus Severus; youngest son of Harry, (yes, he named his son after the great Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape) had a hard time in his first year because of the popularity of his dad. Stubborn child, which I’m sure he got that from his dad. Albus became friend with Scorpius Malfoy (son of Draco Malfoy) who is an unwanted friend. Many students don’t want to be friends with him because his dad was a death eater before and they thought that he’s the son of Voldemort.
One night, Amos Diggory (father of Cedric Diggory, the good looking student who died at the TriWizard Tournament), visits Harry to ask him to use the Time Turner of the Ministry of Magic to bring back Cedric’s life. Harry, firm in his decision not to change the past, told Amos that they’ve already destroyed the Time Turner. No one knows that Albus is listening in their conversations, he was caught by Delphi (Amos Diggory’s niece). They talked about Albus’s purpose of going to Harry’s house. Since Albus is a stubborn child, he wanted to prove to people that he is not ‘just the son of Harry’.
Albus also wanted to rebel against his dad, so he talked to Scorpius to go with him in this mission of finding the Time Turner and bring back Cedric’s life. So together with Delphi they plan their way to the Ministry of Magic to find the Time Turner.
I am going to cut this because; I want you to read the book too. If I continue telling you the story, I might spill the important part of the book and you won’t read it anymore and the book will be purposeless. 😀
I know it’s so bitin, but that’s my intention. 🙂 hehe
Favorite line of the book: “DUMBLEDORE: Harry, there is never a perfect answer in this messy, emotional world. Perfection is beyond the reach of humankind, beyond the reach of magic. In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
3. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
High school love is always the sweetest! Haha.
Maybe because most of your first experiences about a boyfriend – girlfriend thing, happens in high school. Like first kiss, first I love you, first love, first different kind of dates like movies, dinner, stroll in the park, etc.
For Eleanor, all her first experiences about dating are with Park. They met on a bus ride going to school, being a transfer student she has no seat reservation on the bus since every seat has been taken by the regular students. But the driver insisted that she has to sit before the bus can go, leaving her with no choice but to look for a vacant one. She goes deeper into the bus and found Park sitting alone occupying two seats. Eleanor looked at Park, but Park is on his earphone and not hearing anything. The driver shouts louder to Eleanor to sit down, Park heard it and look at Eleanor, he has no choice but to let Eleanor sit unless he wanted to get late for school.
Every day, they sit together on the bus not talking to each other, Park on his earphone and reading comic books. One day Park noticed that Eleanor is looking at his comic book and also reading the page he is on. And that is the beginning of everything. The talks, sharing of comic book, and listening to music that they like and recommending a band artist to each other.
It goes deeper into holding hands, hugs, then kissing and more kissing. The two are so in love and are inseparable. The relationships they have are legal to Park’s family, but are underground to Eleanor’s because of his stepfather who dislikes her.
To know the ending of the book which I consider is not really the ending, read it.
I hope there’s a book 2 for this, when Rainbow Rowell is not any longer busy writing other books. 😀
Favorite line of the book: “I just can’t believe that life would give us to each other,’ he said, ‘and then take it back.’ ‘I can,’ she said. ‘Life’s a bastard.” ― Rainbow Rowell, Eleanor & Park
4. Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han
Yes! Finally! I’ve waited for this book, and when it came out last May, I am much stoked to read this. If you read my Good Reads 2016, I’ve read the book 1 and 2 and Lara Jean is very close to my heart because she’s Asian. I love the traditional family that she has, because my family is like that too. Hehe
Well, let’s now go to the back, sobrang daming kilig moment in this book. Peter proves that she is really into Lara Jean, all the surprises that she did for her is so romantic and so cute for a man. Like the surprise cookies he bought in one of the famous bakeries in New York, so simple, but so much effort on the part of Peter. And the most nakakilig is the surprise birthday celebration of Lara Jean right after their graduation prom. Peter silently planned the surprise, involving Lara Jeans’ friends; they help Peter in hiding the surprise to her. So kilig. Hahaha
I’m so hopeless romantic. I know. 😀 😀 😀
But just like a normal relationship, it has to go through some problems and quarrels to test your love for each other. Because if everything is perfect, love can be taken for granted and no one will find the way back to where you feel love is stronger then suddenly you fall out of love and you just give up. 😦 😦
So yes, their relationship had been tested a lot. One of those is their college plan, going into the same school; University of Virginia (UVA) where they can spend more time together, but unfortunately Lara Jean didn’t get in, she didn’t pass the assessment, while Peter got in as a varsity player for the Lacrosse scholarship program.
Lara Jean is so heartbroken with what happened, she is so looking forward to spending college with her heartthrob boyfriend, to staying up late talking, to last-minute road trips and going home whenever she wanted because the school is just 20-30 minutes away from home, but that’s not going to happen.
Now she is half hearted with their college plans as she is accepted to William and Mary which is more than an hour away from UVA. She’s thinking if this will work with them, knowing a lot of college students didn’t pass the long distance relationship difficulties. Her sister adds up to her trouble reminding her of what their mom says “Don’t be the one to go to college with a boyfriend”, that they should enjoy college life and meets a lot of new friends. I’m going to stop here, and let you read the whole book to know the ending. Highly recommended book, start with the 1st to really feel the life of Lara Jean. I have influenced 2 officemate to read the series and they liked it too. 🙂 🙂
Jenny Han said that this will be the ending for Lara Jean’s book series; it saddened me that at this point I have to be the one to decide what happen to them. Well, I guess I’ll be doing it with a happy ending.
Favorite Line: “Music makes everything more romantic, doesn’t it? One second you’re walking your dog in the suburbs, and then you put on Adele, and it’s like you’re in a movie and you’ve just had your heart brutally broken.” ― Jenny Han, Always and Forever, Lara Jean
5. Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery
I read this book because of Lara Jean or should I say because of Jenny Han. Some of the quotes used in the last book of Lara Jean are from this book. I got curious, so I started checking the book in google and I found out that it was written in 1901! That old! I mean ancient! I read the reviews and it was so positive and encouraging.
As I read the book, I wonder who would hate Anne. She’s such a wonderful girl who loves imagining things and telling stories of her life to the people who matters to her. I love her views in life; she didn’t give up even though no one wanted to adopt her as an orphan little girl. She got into Green Gables because Mrs. Spencer misunderstood the news that 2 siblings; Marilla and Matthew, wanted to adopt a girl when in fact they wanted to adopt a boy to help Matthew on the farm. The day Anne enters their lives they are sure that they wanted to bring her back to the asylum; they waited a day before travelling miles to send Anne back to Mrs. Spencer.
Unaware of the light and joy that Anne brings to them even for one day, Marilla is now unsure if sending back Anne is really a good choice, now that Matthew has developed a connection with Anne. Marilla will try to convince herself not to push Anne away, so she gives Anne a chance to live with them as long as she will behave herself.
I love how this first book goes; Anne blossoms into a wonderful woman with her heart as big as green gables or maybe bigger than that.
Favorite line: “Why must people kneel down to pray? If I really wanted to pray I’ll tell you what I’d do. I’d go out into a great big field all alone or in the deep, deep woods and I’d look up into the sky—up—up—up—into that lovely blue sky that looks as if there was no end to its blueness. And then I’d just feel a prayer.” L.M Montgomery, – Anne of Green Gables
6. Sad Girls by Lang Leav
Ok, this is the first novel of Lang Leav and for her first it was remarkable. She’s known for being a poem writer about love, brokenness, friendship and adventures.
Sad girls are technically about the 3 girls who are sad. They are friends since primary school and when high school came I could say that they’re having the time of their lives as a friend, student and a girlfriend. Suddenly, one LIE changed their lives.
Audrey, Lucy and Candella are chatting in Candella’s room. Unexpectedly, Audrey crafted a lie, saying that she saw Ana and her dad in Ana’s window having sex. Neither did they know that Candella’s little sister is eavesdropping behind the closed door. So this little girl told what she heard to her mom and then like a lightning bolt the news spread to the whole town.
One day, they heard a news that Ana was found dead in their bathtub with cut arms; suicide, her family said.
That night, Audrey had a panic attack and every time someone will talk about Ana she’s having the attack. The condition never leaves her knowing that her fabricated story is the reason why Ana is dead.
The story is long, but I never found a moment where I feel lazy reading it. You’ve got to read it to know what really happened the night before Ana is found dead and how did Audrey moved on from a life caged to her LIES.
It was a great first novel from Lang Leav, and I dreamed for my first work to turn out to be like that. I’m such a desperate writer. I know! I’m far from finishing a book with all the things in my hands right now. I have to finish the big projects in my hands first so I can totally focus on writing. I hope!
Favorite line: “I learned that writing is the consolation prize you are given when you don’t get the thing you want the most.” ― Lang Leav, Sad Girls
Currently, I’m reading “Everyday” by David Levithan and I’m being blown away by how extensive his imagination. I’m almost halfway through the book and every day I looked forward to my ‘reading time’ as I am so eager to finish the book right away.
I love those people who give me books as a gift. 😀 😀 They’re just few, but they sure know how to get me. So planning to get me a gift, all I ask is just a …..
